Official name : Islamic Republic of Iran

Location : South West Asia 

Climate : Iran is divided climatically into three main regions : the extremely hot coast along the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, the temperate but arid central highland, and the tableland of the intensely cold Alburz Mountains.

Area : Over 1,648,000 square kilometers (636,296 square miles), Iran is larger than Britain + France + Italy + Spain + Switzerland.

  • Major cities : Isfahan, Mashad, Tabriz, Shiraz, Ahwaz, Kerman, Hamadan.

  • Coast line with the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman : Approx. 2000 kilometres.

  • Religions : Shiite Muslims : 95%, Sunni Muslims : 4%  -  Zoroastrian, Jewish and Christian: 1%

  • Languages :  Persian Farsi and Persian dialects : 58% , Turkish and Turkish dialect :26%,   Kurdish : 9%,  Luri : 2%,  Balooch : 1%,  Arabic : 1%, Turkmen: 1%,  Other : 2%

  • Constitution : 2-3 December 1979, revised 1989 to expand powers of the presidency  and  eliminate the prime ministry.

  • Monetary unit : 10 Iranian Rials (IRR) = 1 Toman

  • Industries : Petroleum, Petrochemicals, textiles, transportation equipment, cement and other construction materials, food processing (particularly sugar refining and vegetable oil production), metal fabricating, carpets, cigarettes…

  • Agriculture : Principal products – wheat, barley , rice, sugar beets, sugarcane, grapes, fruits, cotton, tea, nuts, pistachios, caviar, livestock-sheep, goats, poultry , dairy products, wool and … .

  • Exports : Petroleum, carpets, pistachios, fresh and dried fruits, nuts, animal hides and leather, caviar, metal ores, cement, textiles, handicrafts… .
